By projecting human-like egos onto nature, the world instantly made sense. The storm wasn’t an unfeeling, random physics event; it was a Storm God who was angry. If the god was angry, it meant the human ego had a path to control the situation. You could offer a sacrifice, chant a mantra, or follow a ritual to appease the deity. Religion was born not as a luxury, but as an essential psychological technology to give human beings the illusion of control over a hostile planet.
Phase 2: Scaling Up the Ego (The Invention of Monotheism)
As human populations grew from tiny wandering clans into massive agricultural cities, local tribal gods became a massive administrative problem. Every valley had its own deity, which caused constant, small-scale tribal warfare. If your tribe raided a neighboring village, it wasn’t an ethical sin; it was just your local god defeating their local god. Under this fractured system, you could never build a massive, integrated civilization because strangers from different tribes would never trust each other.
To build global empires, rulers and priests upgraded the software of belief. They invented or adopted One Universal, All-Seeing God. This was the ultimate tool of social control:
- The Invisible Police Force: If God is one, infinite, and everywhere, He acts as an internal surveillance system. In 1095, Pope Urban II realized he could solve this internal crisis of control by turning the weapon of faith outward. Faced with an existential threat, the highly fractured, warring Muslim emirates were forced to use the absolute concept of a single God to unify their ranks. Brilliant military commanders like Saladin and the later Mamluk Sultan Baibars weaponized the concept of holy defense. They told their armies that they were not merely defending territory, but guarding the sacred boundaries of God’s final revelation against cosmic corruption.
The battlefield was elevated into an arena of spiritual martyrdom. By 1642, the alliance reached its brutal climax. Another fierce Mongol leader, Gushri Khan, marched his horse-archers into Tibet, violently crushed all of the Dalai Lama’s religious and political rivals, and handed the absolute civil, military, and tax governance of the entire country to the 5th Dalai Lama. The Altar had officially become the Throne.
To consolidate this newfound political power, the “Great Fifth” began constructing the massive Potala Palace—a building designed intentionally as a hybrid of a sacred monastery and an unassailable military fortress. He declared that the Dalai Lamas were the direct earthly emanations of the cosmic savior Avalokiteshvara.
But the moment the spiritual throne became the highest political prize of the state, it became a playground for the world’s most cold-blooded human greed. For the next two centuries, rival political factions, ambitious regents, and the neighboring Qing Dynasty of China realized that whoever controlled the body of the young Dalai Lama controlled Tibet’s entire wealth.
The resulting history is a dark, tragic sequence of assassinations: the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Dalai Lamas all mysteriously collapsed and died in their youths, never living past their 21st birthdays. The Ottomans took these children during their most impressionable developmental years, completely erasing their past identities. They changed their names, forced their conversion to Islam, and subjected them to rigorous monastic and military training. Because these children had their biological egos shattered, they transferred all their natural psychological survival needs onto the Sultan. They grew up to become the Janissaries—the most ruthless, highly educated, and technologically advanced standing infantry in the world.
Yet, human nature provides a striking counter-narrative. Stolen children like the legendary Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha rose to become the de facto rulers of the entire superpower. Even while running an Islamic empire, his deep, subconscious biological roots survived; he used his absolute power to secretly funnel wealth back to his native Serbian village and legally restored the Serbian Christian Orthodox Church, appointing his own biological brother as the Patriarch.
The Last Word: Waking from the Theater of Blood

Shankaracharya looked at a world fractured by fighting sects, local tyrants, and rigid social prejudices and realized that an external “Watcher God” in the sky will always be corrupted by politicians to launch holy wars. His philosophy of Advaita Vedanta offers the only permanent escape from the theater of blood: the realization of Non-Dualism.
He argued that the separate, terrified individual ego is the ultimate illusion (Maya). When you look through the Cosmic Timestamp and quiet your overthinking mind, you realize that the world’s environments, borders, and kingdoms are just temporary, passing scenes.
The light of awareness looking out of an Israeli eye, a Muslim eye, a Christian eye, a Hindu eye, or a Buddhist eye is the same unbroken ocean of universal consciousness. We are not separate, hostile waves fighting for control of a chaotic sea; we are the same water. Only when the human species wakes up from the delusion of the separate ego will the history books finally stop being written in blood, allowing us to descend from the violent, noisy storms of time into the permanent, deep peace of the absolute ocean underneath.
